Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
I am writing to you to let you know about the exciting developments on our iThemba project and to invite you to become part of something worthwhile again.

1. INTRODUCTION
In 2006 Lufthansa Global Telesales, in partnership with Lufthansa’s Help Alliance, started an exciting pilot project on the outskirts of Cape Town: we launched the first iThemba school in one of the most impoverished townships in Cape Town. With your help we offered kids aged three to six a healthy and safe learning environment, the opportunity to learn English in preparation for further schooling, and sometimes their only meal of the day.
Overall we provided top-class education to 50 children. Those old enough went on to enter English-speaking primary schools, while 150 new children applied to be on the iThemba school’s waiting list. Unfortunately we didn’t have the space to take them all on.
Based on the success of the school,
we now want to expand and hence
open a new pre-primary school. After much research, we have fixed our eyes on a different community that is in dire need of quality pre-school education. With your support, the bigger premises will allow us to service more children per year and therefore have a greater impact on the chosen community.

2. NEW SCHOOL, NEW PREMISES
The new school will be built in the township Vrygrond (Free Earth), located about 20km from the centre of Cape Town. This former informal settlement can be found on the False Bay coast near Muizenberg and is the perfect site to grow another iThemba school.
The new premises will serve the Vrygrond, Capricorn, community of 12,000 people, where more than two thirds are unemployed. About 2,500 children of various ages live here, most of them in need of decent pre-school education as they are generally two to three years behind their age group due to economic and social deprivation. Currently only two pre-schools of respectable quality are available to them.
We are excited about this site because it fits our commitment to quality pre-school education and also delivers significant benefits to a whole community.

3. WHAT NEXT?
Initially the school will consist of 3 classrooms, each approximately 50 m2 which can accommodate 25 children, plus an admin building consisting of an office, reception, kitchen, staff room etc. The construction will start in September 2009 and will be completed by November this year. During October and November we will register learners, review and finalise an appropriate curriculum for the school.
During the course of November/December, we will equip and prepare the school to be ready for next year and select one professional teacher and one assistant from the community for each class. Finally, in January 2010 iThemba School Capricorn will open their doors!

4. WANT TO GET INVOLVED?
To offer 75 children a different future, we need your help.
There are so many ways you can get involved. You can either contribute to the building of the classrooms (at €34,000 / R400,000 each), or take your pick of any of the invaluable items below that each kid needs. (We learnt the importance of these items during the pilot project, where for example full attendance was finally reached when a ‘school uniform’ was distributed.)
For the price of two movie tickets, you can give a child the tools it needs to learn its ABC or you can provide a full summer school uniform for less than a tank of petrol. Find your choice in the list below.
