Dear Friends, Colleagues and Supporters of iThemba School Capricorn,

Over a year has passed since the official inauguration of our iThemba School on March 5th 2010. In January we went full swing into the 2nd year and welcomed 25 additional children.

The school provides a safe and fun learning environment for 75 children aged between 3-6 years. I am proud to say that iThemba is no longer a project but a successfully operating school.

Every time I visit the school, I notice that the children are eager to speak English and that they are happy to say “hello” to our visitors. Our guestbook is filling up with lots of best wishes and other motivating and inspiring comments.

Our goal for this year is to establish partnerships with local companies and organizations to further entrench iThemba in the Capricorn community and to make donations even more sustainable.

Birgit Thümecke

I want to thank each and every one of you for supporting our school. We have received many gifts for the children, donations from Year End and Fundraising Parties as well as salary contributions.

Thanks for giving our children a brighter future. Please keep going with your fantastic initiatives.

We will keep you updated about the development of our little ‘rascals’.

WE ARE BACK – FIRST DAY FOR 25 NEW LEARNERS

In the last couple of months we were very busy settling in our new children and reassuring their parents. It takes time to get used to the school routine especially when it is your first experience. I remember when little Siso was waiting for her lunch she had a hard time keeping her eyes open.

Now all children have comfortably settled in and love their new school.

Our older children seem very happy to be back and look fabulous in their new uniform. We also welcomed two additional staff members: Teacher Juanita Langford and assistant Emily Matthews.

The children love them already and we are grateful for all their tireless, hard work.
A special thank you to our caretaker Colin who stays at night when the community is up in arms and despite being scared always thinks of the security of the school first. The staff members are also becoming good sports people as we teach our children different ball games.

Look out Cape Town we have a few Western Province cricketers in the making!

Kind regards
Veronica

iTHEMBA WELCOMES FANS FROM AROUND THE GLOBE

In March 2011 Cape Town hosted the SCENE Meeting where all GTS Group Managing Directors, Corporate Function Directors, GTS Location Managers and Dr. Huber from Lufthansa came together. This time we had a special visit on our agenda: the iThemba school. Colin, our caretaker, took everyone on a walking tour through the community. It was a firsthand experience for everyone to see what life in a township can be like, where many families can hardly afford a roof over their heads, with no running water or electricity, in a neighborhood where high unemployment and crime is constantly present. It is just around the corner from the area described above but iThemba seems like a completely different world with a playground and a garden, with guidance, lots of love and laughter.

Our children surprised Michaela Kaim-Schoby (Site Manager Melbourne) with a birthday song and it was one of these moments where tears could not be stopped. It was the first visit for many of our Site Managers, who actively support iThemba and it will be an unforgettable memory.

OUR NEW HelpAlliance PROJECT REPRESENTATIVE

We have also welcomed Susanne Winkler from the Lufthansa HelpAlliance in Cape Town.

She assisted the iThemba team for 10 weeks and will be the new project representative for iThemba within the HelpAlliance.

This has been a very important step in our collaboration and opens further fundraising opportunities.

Our iThemba team is now complete and we will work with full forces to provide quality education for our children.
