January 2010
iThemba January 2010 - and so the journey begins…
iThemba school here we come! And so their journey begins … Following months of extensive planning, constructing and equipping, the doors of iThemba School Capricorn have opened on time today at 91 Drury Road, (Vrygrond, Muizenberg East 7958, Cape Town) for 50 young learners aged four to five. The intensive project work by Lufthansa Global TeleSales Cape Town, began 8 months ago in April 2009 with the signature of the lease agreement and the plan approval in September and ended with the completion of the building process in December. The school is well equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, designed to make a fundamental difference within the community. Since the beginning of the year, the staff there has been hard at work to create a warm and friendly atmosphere in the new classrooms. Veronika (principal); Tania (teacher); Tandi and Noxolo (teacher assistants); Fazia (cook), Lena (cleaner) and Collin (janitor) are working hard on site to give the “newbies” a special welcome. This staff and the Lufthansa Global TeleSales project team, have an amazing spirit!
Smiles on the first day of school!
There was great excitement amongst the Lufthansa Global TeleSales staff and their guests, who gave the learners a warm welcome on their first day at school. The formal inauguration of iThemba School Capricorn is scheduled for the beginning of March 2010. The day certainly lived up to all expectations for the children. Pupils and their parents arrived as early as 7:30am to complete any outstanding documentation, meet the school staff and view the surroundings. The children were given porridge and fruit for breakfast before getting dressed in their new school uniforms of t-shirts and shorts and settling into their classes for educational games and activities. As temperatures soared towards 36 degrees, the special day progressed with outdoor play time for the children, a small informal opening ceremony for the adults and welcome refreshments of water and juice.
Casting a solid foundation for a brighter future
iThemba School Capricorn will be a place of excellence, offering learners nutrition and top class education by well trained staff members. We strive to create a safe, warm and healthy environment in which learners can unlock their innate talents. Teaching a basic foundation of English in a practical and interactive manner will provide them with the necessary readiness for admission into the best schools within the surrounding areas.
We take this opportunity to wish our staff and learners all the best for the year ahead!

April 2009
Plans 2009
Finally in April 2009, new premises were found in Vrygrond, situated between Lavender Hill and Muizenberg. Here the new iThemba School can build its own facility with the possibility to operate independently.

Vrygrond has a community of over 12,000 people and is a former informal settlement with an estimated 70% unemployment rate. It is one of the poorest communities in Cape Town and the children who live here are generally two to three years behind their age group (even in the earliest grades). An estimated 2500 children of various ages reside in Vrygrond and many of them need decent pre-school education, which is currently not available.
Our aim is to continue to provide a top class education to approximately 75 socially disadvantaged children in this extremely impoverished community. We promote English and expose the children to a very rich educational program, which would normally only be available in middle class and private schools. We believe that when children get the opportunity to experience the excitement and joy of learning we provide them with a solid foundation for a lifelong learning and development.
